Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women. With the recognition of disparities in cardiovascular care in women, the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign was launched in 2004 to increase awareness and collaborative efforts to close gaps in the care of women with CVD. Over the past 2 decades, this campaign along with other integrated efforts increased awareness, expanded research funding, catalyzed discovery of unique biological pathways, enhanced knowledge, and fostered specific guidelines for prevention and treatment of CVD in women. Beyond that, it ignited development of a specialized field coupled with centers dedicated to the care of women with CVD. Despite improvement in awareness, significant gaps persist, and adverse CVD trends are emerging in women. [For more, see the editorial from Circulation's Fourth Annual Go Red Women issue]
